JDM stands for Japanese Domestic Market. It means the engine was built for a car sold inside Japan, and spent its working life on Japanese roads rather than American ones.
Why the mileage is genuinely low
Japan runs a vehicle inspection called shaken. Every car faces it at three years old, then every two years after that, and the cost climbs steeply as the car ages.
Past a certain point it becomes cheaper to replace the car than to keep certifying it. Owners move on, and the car is retired while the engine still has plenty of life left.
Japanese drivers also cover far fewer miles a year than American ones. Dense cities, excellent rail, and expensive tolls all cut the distance a car travels. The result is engines coming out of vehicles that were scrapped early, not worn out.
What that means when you buy one
A JDM engine under 60,000 miles is not unusual, it is typical. That is why a used import often has less wear than a domestic used engine with the same years on it.
It is still a used engine. Replace the timing belt, water pump, seals and gaskets before or during installation. Those are wear items, they are cheap next to the engine, and a failed timing belt is not covered by any warranty.
